At the Auburn Leach K-9 Academy, we want those who "Protect and Serve" our communities to know how much we appreciate them! So, if you are in law enforcement, this page is dedicated to you and your K-9 companions.
A police dog, commonly referred to as a "K-9
dog"is a dog that is trained specifically to assist police and other
law-enforcement personnel.
Just as different police officers perform different roles,
police dogs serve different functions on the force, as well. Such as:
- Public
order enforcement dog
- Search and Rescue (SAR)
- Detection Dogs for drugs, explosives, etc.
- Cadaver Dogs
German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are common breeds used
in law enforcement. Other breeds may
include:
- Argentine Dogo
- Beagle
- Bloodhound
- Boxer
- Doberman Pinscher
- Dutch Shepherd
- Giant Schnauzer
- Labrador Retriever
- Rottweiler
- Springer Spaniel
In many jurisdictions, intentionally harming or killing a
police dog is a crime. A growing number
of police dogs are now outfitted with protective vests and may even have their
own police badges and IDs. A police dog
killed in the line of duty is often given a full police funeral.
